Hey there friends. We know we disappeared for half a year and we are so sorry about that. The 2nd half of 2022 ended up being quite hard and busy. Stephanie is expecting baby number 3 and published book 3. Liz published her first book (A Christmas romance anthology) and has been working on her next books and season 2 of her calamitycast audiodrama Spacemerica. Speaking of, we have very sad news regarding co-founder of CC and audio engineer (among many other roles like co-writer of Spacemerica with Liz) Daniel Williams passed away in August which is a big reason Liz hasn’t been podcasting.

We recorded this episode right before Christmas and I totally meant for it to be available a few weeks ago. Here’s to 2023 and being more on top of things.

/

Early May 2022, Stephanie and Liz packed up the car and traveled to a cabin by a lake in Michigan. There we met up with four other romance authors in various stages of their careers for a few days of writing and being unplugged from the rest of the world.

So, of course, we had to take a break from writing (and procrastinating) to record an episode of Dick of the Week with some amazing ladies!

We discuss everything from our current projects, sexy words we like and don’t like, the benefits of TikTok, and so much more. We are off the rails in this episode, so buckle up, friends!

Keep in mind, friends! We recorded this with no internet and on new to us equipment, so it was a bit of an experiment. Be kind!

Join Liz and special guest co-host Sarah Estep as we discuss what we were working on for Camp NaNoWriMo and how quickly we realized it wasn’t working out so great.

We also talk about our sci-fi romance obsession, Ruby Dixon and one of her new releases, The Half-Orc’s Maiden Bride.

Join Liz and Stephanie as they discuss something incredibly important: Stephanie published her book! YAY! We tried out Tiktok Live for this episode so Stephanie could answer people’s questions about her book (Sasha and the Butcher), writing, and indie publishing.

Sasha and the Butcher is a mafia romance novel set in St. Louis and is high heat and contains some violence.

This was our first attempt at recording while on live and it went… okay. We are learning and next time will be better!

/

On this week’s episode of Dick of the Week, Stephanie and Liz get into the hot and steamy holiday spirit. We read two different spicy santa related Christmas Novellas (both available on Kindle Unlimited) and thoroughly enjoyed them!

Santa’s Baby by Chloe Maine is a hot, age-gap, Daddy k!nk romance novella where the heroine is into her dad’s best friend.

Santa Claus is Going to Town on Me by Marie Lipscomb and is about a Christmas hating heroine who accidentally meets- and falls for- the real Santa Claus. This book is also extra spicy and for those looking to be on Santa’s naught list.

We will see you all in 2022! Enjoy the rest of your year and stay safe.

Hello friends! We meant to release this episode last week but… life… and NaNoWriMo. Stephanie and Liz both participated in National Novel Writing Month again. For those not familiar, NaNoWriMo is when writers from all over spend the month of November writing 50,000 words.

We recorded this episode about halfway through the month so we discuss what we were working on and how it was going. Join us in our misery and successes!

Since recording this, both of us hit our goal, which is super exciting!

Happy Halloween, dear friends! To celebrate the spookiest of seasons, Stephanie and Liz decide to read another Tiktok popular romance novel. This time we read A Lady of Rooksgrave Manor by Kathryn Moon.

This book is:

  • Historical (Victorian era) Romance
  • Reverse Harem
  • Erotic Romance
  • Monsters

If you are interest in learning about what a RH romance but twist it on it’s head by making all the suitors of the supernatural nature, this is the book for you. It is absolutely delightful so listen to us chat about Kathryn Moon’s newest release.

Hello everyone! Stephanie and Liz are back with a new episode of Dick of the Week! This time we discussed the utterly confusing scale of heat levels for romance novels. No heat, sweet, “clean”, low heat, medium heat, high heat, spicy, steamy, erotic- what does it all mean?!

We… apparently still have no idea and neither does anyone else. So let’s chat about it! We also spent time discussing the new Twitter account HEA_DoesItBang.

Dick of the Week episode 56 is all about social media! Whether you’re a reader or a writer, (or both!) social media plays a rather large role in finding, selling, and talking about romance novels.

Social media, regardless of your age, tends to inform you of certain trends and popular books or authors. Tiktok is a major player right now for making audiences discover books they might not have known before (see our last episode about Ice Planet Barbarians for a good example!). Major bookstores like Barnes and Noble have #booktok table displays for books that gain popularity on that app.

Whether you’re an active member in a romance Facebook group, an Indie author trying to sell your books, or just a general book lover scrolling Tiktok, social media is both an amazing recourse and overwhelming AF.

Join Liz and Stephanie while they try to navigate through it all on this week’s episode of DICK OF THE WEEK!

WE’RE BACK BABY!

Seriously. We are sorry. We didn’t mean to be gone so long. Stephanie ended up sick and then her fam got sick (not covid, whew!) and Liz went camping and then to the beach and just… life went weird.

But during that time, the internet exploded with news of blue aliens. That is right, everyone, we are finally discussing Ruby Dixon‘s Ice Planet Barbarians. This is a Sci-fi Romance series that started back in 2015 but recently became even more popular thanks to platforms like Tiktok.

Trigger Warning for IPB:

Kidnapping, abduction, abuse, rape. This all takes place in part 1 of the book so if you want to read and don’t want that, just skip to part 2. There might be a little reference to it but nothing in big detail.

Books & Authors Discussed:

Ice Planet Barbarians book 1 (with maybe a wee bit of info about other books)

Cate C Wells: Steel Bones Motorcycle Club series, Hitting the Wall, Run Posy Run

Katee Robert: Neon Gods, Wicked Villians Series, Sabine Valley Series, Your Dad Will Do

Hello lovers and listeners!

Occasionally, we will have special “book club” type episodes called “DOTW Reads a Book.” This is one of those episodes!

In this episode of Dick of the Week, Stephanie and Liz discuss (re gush) all about the historical romance novel “The Prince of Broadway” by Joanne Shupe. While this is the second book of her Uptown Girls series, you can easily read it on its own. We cannot tell you enough how much you should read this book- and well, the entire series. We stan Joanne.

The book takes place in 1891 New York City where a young socialite decides to proposition a mysterious casino owner to teach her everything she needs to know about opening her own casino for ladies only. This book has SPICE and we are HERE FOR IT. Obviously, this episode is full of spoilers about the book so be warned if that’s not your thing.

Stephanie and Liz are back with another episode of Dick of the Week. This week we decided to do something a little different. We picked an author we love and have read all of her books and decided to do a deep dive into them. We picked Meika Usher, a very funny contemporary romance author. If you love humor, snark, and sexiness, you will love her. We discuss her four books (The Breakaway series and the How You Get The Girl series) and how the familial relationships in her books are nearly as important as the romantic ones. We look at tropes like best friend’s sibling/sibling’s best friend and how that trope can be done in really fun and interesting ways.

Check out Meika Usher’s website for more information on her books and how to find her on social media.

Books Talked About:

  • Meika Usher’s Breakaway series (Something So Sweet, Goodnight & Go, Ready to Run) and How To Get The Girl series (Make A Move)
  • Strictly Professional by Kathryn Nolan
  • Her Halloween Candy (Men At Work series) by Tiffany Reisz
  • Daring and the Duke by Sarah Maclean
  • Too Far To Care by Jen Luerssen

Celebrating Three Years of Dick of the Week!

Three years ago today, was not just any ordinary Valentine’s Day. It was instead the day that Dick of the Week launched it’s very first episode. We have grown as podcasters through the years and have enjoyed every moment and every episode we have been able to create for you.

Here are a few of our favorite episodes:

Any of the episodes we have read “My Lady’s Choosing” an interactive romance novel by Kitty Curran and Larissa Zageris: Episode 22, 24, and 26 is our first time through the book.

When we watched and discussed the documentary “Love Between the Covers” which takes a look into the world of romance writers and readers: Episode 39: Love Between The Covers.

When we had our first ever male guest on the show to discuss book covers and design: Episode 29: Judging Books By Their Covers.

When we saw Chuck Tingle live and were able to meet him after the show and then talked about our experiences about that night: Episode 42: Our Friend Chuck

This is just a small sample of some of the awesome moments that have occurred during the last three years, and we cannot wait to keep making more content for you. If there are any topics you’d love for us to dive into, please contact us on social media or email us at lnlsmutcast@gmail.com.

Okay team, the first half of this Dick of the Week is Liz and Stephanie playing catch up with each other and their lives and plans for 2020. The second half is us trying to tackle the big giant mess that is the RWA (Romance Writers of America).

As the holidays were upon us, a big mess of racism and unfair treatment to historical romance writer Courtney Milan. Race issues unfortunately is not a new problem in the organization but shit really hit the fan and still going on. We try to explain what happened in December until now. We are not experts in this matter but have been trying to keep up with each new occurence as information has been released to us.

Due to the matter of this episode, we did not give any romance novel recommendations, but that will be back in our next episode. ❤

Stephanie and Liz did a thing. They got together and watched the movie After, based on the book by Anna Todd by the same name. And drank wine. And then recorded about it.

If you listen to us, you know pretty much the only rule is we don’t talk shit on other romance writers or their books (unless they did something absolutely horrible, see #cocktgate). We just don’t mention the books that we have read that disappointed us in one way or another and move on.

But friends.

We just couldn’t help ourselves on this one. But let it be clear that we are not trash talking Ms. Todd. We are sure she is a lovely human. But we sure has hell will be trash talking these characters and this horrible movie.

Dick of the Week Episode 31

Hello there listeners!

Today we embark once again on the romance adventure that is My Lady’s Choosing. This is part 2 of this particular timeline, so I suggest listening to part 1 first, if you haven’t. That being said, Liz does a recap of what happened there, so you should be fine either way.

Stephanie and Liz are joined behind the mic by the ever hilarious, utterly talented, local comedian (amongst other things) Amy Milton!

This time we get to decide if we are staying in London to help good ol Benny with his family drama or if we are saying, see ya later sucker! And jetting (or, well, boating) off to Egypt.

My Lady’s Choosing is written by Kitty Curran and Larissa Zageris.

Dick of the Week Episode 30:

Hello there listeners! Stephanie and Liz had a totally different plan and topic for today’s episode… and then we got behind the mic and something totally different happened.

More or less our own little State of the Union… State of the Dick? Our… Dicklaration of Purpose? Yeah, let’s go with that!

Oops?

We’re not mad about it. This ended up just us chatting about the current state of our books (big news from both of us!) And other books we want to work on and what we are enjoying right now and how both of us are struggling with finding books to read right now.

Dick of the Week episode 29: Judging Books By Their Covers

Hey there listeners!

Today Stephanie and Liz have their very first male guest on the show (whaaaat!) Mr. Billy Fraizer to discuss what makes book covers important and what makes us like or dislike a cover, especially with the newer illustrated cover thrend. We also play a fun new game where we hand a romance novel to Billy and he has to guess the genre and what it is about.

Billy is a local St. Louis graphic designer, writer, and a cappella singer and can be found at his website here.

Whew, that title sure is a mouthful! Just like Lord Benedict’s…. well. We’ll leave the rest of that sentence to your imagination.

Anyway! Today Stephanie and Liz are joined by St. Louis funny lady, Ella Fritts. She is both a stand-up comedian and an improviser. The three of us tackle My Lady’s Choosing from the near beginning. We go back to that fateful choice of going with Lord Benny or going with the delicious Scottish Mac.

This is Lord Benedict’s time, and we are here for the drama.

My Lady’s Choosing is a romance Choosable adventure book by Kitty Curran and Larissa Zageris.

Dick of the Week episode 27

Hello! Stephanie and Liz are back to discuss what our breaking point is with books. What makes us give up, put it down, and walk away (most likely angrily)?

Poor writing skills? Unlikable heroes? Story arcs with no redemption? Sure all of that is part of it, but the big no-no is when partners cheat on each other.

Hello listeners!

This week Stephanie and Liz are joined by Sarah Lashley, a local St. Louis improv comic, for the 3rd and final segment (of this batch at least) of My Lady’s Choosing by Kitty Curran and Larissa Zageris.

Things get wild, even beastly one might say, as we continue on our path for love and happiness. Listen now to see if we found true love or if our story ends with a sadder twist.

Dick of the Week Episode 25

Hey there listeners! This week Stephanie and Liz do their first ever Author Spotlight! We chat for awhile about Christina Mitchell, a Romance author from Michigan who just had her debut book drop. Her book “How to Stay” blew our minds, so we talk about it for awhile. We hope it convinces you to go buy it.

We also discuss our current solo writing projects and where we are with them and what still needs to occur. This leads to discussions of how being an Indie Author is not for the lazy. It is HARD work to be in charge of everything you’re doing.

And finally, we announce what season 2 of Love & Lust will be! YES!

Dick of the Week episode 24: A Choosable Romance Adventure Part 2

Hey there listeners!

We are back to My Lady’s Choosing, the interactive romance novel by Kitty Curran and Larissa Zageris! Duchess is taking a bit of a hiatus from the show so with us this week is a fellow CalamityCast writer, Brittany Burke! Brittany is a co-writer of the forthcoming thriller audiodrama, Jane the Ripper.

In part 2 of this adventure we decide whether we want to stick with Mac, the handsome Scot with the heart of gold and a burned down orphanage or travel to Lord Craven, the mysteriously sexy man that everyone seems to fear. Things. Get. Wild.

Episode 23: Alpha in the Sheets

Stephanie and Liz are running solo this week, so they decided to put a hold on part 2 of the Choose Your Own Adventure. Instead, they are diving into the world of Book Boyfriends! What makes the male leads in books stand out? Do we like the same traits in books that we like in men in real life? How do you create an alpha character without crossing over into total D-bag territory? These things and more are discussed in this episode!

Books Mentioned:

Before I ever Met you by Karina Halle

Stephanie, Duchess, and Liz sit down with a copy of “My Lady’s Choosing” an interactive romance novel by Kitty Curran and Larissa Zageris.

Will the Duchess of Dick (us) find her happily ever after with the dreamy and steamy Scotsman, the dark and dangerous Craven, the moody and sharp witted Benedict, or say screw it and go travel with her BFF Evangeline? We don’t even know the answer to this yet, but we are dying to find out!

Sit back, laugh at Liz’s horrible accents, and enjoy part one of our adventure to find love.

Episode 19: Love’s the Only Rule

Hello dear listeners! Welcome back for the newest episode of Dick of the Week. In Love’s the Only Rule, Stephanie, Duchess, and Liz discuss rules of writing romance. Some of these rules we think are incredibly dumb and choose to ignore them. Other rules we think are great and wonder why we don’t use them in our own writing lives. Some of these aren’t actually rules at all, but are just expectations in the genre. But really, when it comes down to it, the only actual rule of romance is that happily ever after in the end.

This episode focuses more on the craft of writing romance.

But as always, we have tons of book recommendations for you!
