This week we are back together, once again, and it feels so good! It is November which means it is time for National Novel Writing Month! Stephanie and Liz are both partaking in NaNoWriMo so the three of us chat about it and our process of writing.
Books Mentioned:
A Different Kind of Love series by Liz Durano
Devil’s Reach series by J. L Drake
Can’t Text This by Teagan Hunter
PS. We totally meant to add an ad in this episode and even left a spot for it and chatted about it BUT we forgot to add it. Oops! So, make sure you go to CalamityCast.com to find all sorts of other amazing podcasts.
Happy hump day, everyone! Did you survive election night? I hope so. Whew.
We weren’t able to get together, but we didn’t want to leave you hanging again, so Liz hung out in her basement with a glass of wine to chat with you. She has some book recs from all three ladies plus talks about the next few episodes we have planned (PS, she forgot to mention that next week is the last episode of Love & Lust season 1 so go check out that show!).
Liz also chats about her love of audiodramas and what makes a good narrator versus one that makes you want to stop listening. She also poses a very important question to you, the audience, and wants to hear your answer!
It is officially the best time of the year: Autumn! Stephanie and Liz decided the best way to celebrate the crisp air is by talking about all those ghoulies and creatures that bump (and, hey probably also hump) in the night.
That’s right! We are talking about Paranormal Romance! Werewolves, vampires, ghosts, witches, and demons, my oh my! This is the first episode in a mini little series we will be doing between now and Halloween. In this episode we discuss what makes Paranormal romance so popular and how it is different from other romance genres.
This week, on Dick of the Week, Stephanie and Liz (sadly no Duchess this time around) dive into the wonderful, adorable, drama-filled world of Young Adult Romance! Wheeee, YA! This is quite the different genre from what we normally discuss.
Stephanie and Liz both happened to watch To All The Boys I Loved Before and Sierra Burgess is a Loser on Netflix and needed to gush at each other about the cuteness, the awkwardness, and the over-all realness that these new YA movies had. Which of course lead to talking about YA books. Sometimes you just need some sweeter, cheesy, teenage angst.
Books and Stuff in this Ep:
To All the Boys I Loved Before (both a book by Jenny Han and a Netflix Original movie)
Sierra Burgess is a Loser (Netflix original movie)
Close by Laurelin Page
Confessions of a Bad Boy Gamer by Cathryn Fox
Temptation by J D Hawkins
The Wrong Bachelor by Alexandra Moody
Straight Up Irish by Magan Vernon
Touchdown by AJ Phoenix

Guess who’s back?! ALL OF US! The gang is back together again, and we are here to get down and dirty once more. This week we discuss the sexy words, euphemisms, and metaphors that tend to be popular in romance novels. Because who can just say they stuck their P in the V? Or B. No judgement. And a Dick by any other name would be his manhood. Or his staff. Or his member. Or his shaft. Or…

Crazy Rich Asians by Kevin Kwan
Night Broken by Patricia Briggs
Bedding the Wrong Brother and Bedding the Bad Boy by Virna DePaul

In this week’s episode we mix things up with our very first guest! Unfortunately Stephanie and Duchess were not available to record, so Liz invited her friend Clare to join her. Clare is both an avid romance reader and an experienced local bartender, with a focus in Whisk(e)y.
The two gals sit back and discuss the use of alcohol in romance novels. Alcohol choices are vastly different depending on the time period and genre of romance. They then discuss how drink choice can be utilized to give greater insight into character traits.

Laurell K Hamilton

Hello there, Listeners! It is I, one of your lovely hosts, Liz! This is just a mini little episode I did by myself because unfortunately due to work and travel issues (Stephanie’s job took her to San Diego Comic Con, HOW COOL!!!) and dumb ol’ migraines, we were not able to get together to do a real full episode for this week. Instead, I sat by myself in my basement and awkwardly chatted to myself. It’s great, I promise.
A big thank you to everyone who came to the first ever CalamityCast Live show that occurred on July 21. Keep an eye on Good, Morning Spacemerica since the live show will be published there. This includes a live reading of Love & Lust!
WE ARE BACK! Thanks for letting us have our mini little break for the 4th.
This week we decided to talk about technology within romance novels. In our audiodrama, Love & Lust, our characters use technology to keep their relationship going due to busy schedules (and to get their motors going, wink!). In lots of modern romance stories, and modern relationships in real life, technology is incredibly important. Despite sometime being awkward.

The ladies are so excited to reach TEN episodes! Thank you so much for being with us on this journey.
Speaking of journeys, every love journey has to start somewhere, right? RIGHT! This week, Stephanie, Duchess, and Liz are discussing meet cutes, or the first time the leading folks meet each other. Now, this isn’t always love at first sight. In fact, some of us prefer when things go badly when they meet instead of that dreaded instalove (but that’s just some of us. You do you, boo).

Jay Crownover- Marked Men series
Jay Crownover- Getaway series
Play Me by Katie McCoy

In this week’s episode Liz and Stephanie discuss (sadly without Duchess, womp womp) about the use of virgins in romance novels. We talk about the differences between virgins in historical romance versus contemporary and how (spoiler alert) it is totally lame to use virginity as a personality description of a character.
Bonus: Listen to Liz rant about the whole #cockygate thing going down in the romance world right now.
Books and authors we mention in this episode:
Something So Sweet, Book 1 of the Breakaway series by Meika Usher
Heart of the Duke Series by Christi Caldwell
Light Weight by Kristy McManus
Never Judge a Lady by Her Cover, Book 4 of the Rules Scoundrels by Sarah MacLean
You know what angers us more than most other things regarding Romance Novels? How often and automatically folks use the term “trashy” to describe the genre.
Listen to us rant about this topic, while still cracking each other up, because we don’t know how to not laugh a lot.

In the 5th installment of Dick of the Week, the ladies discuss who their ideal hunky heroes are (spoilers: they all have beautiful hair and strong arms) before discussing the one aspect of a book everyone is quick to judge: the cover. Stephanie, Duchess, and Liz dive into what they find attractive in a book cover and what makes them say “no thanks” to a book among a genre that tends to rely on hard abs and seductive looks.
A special thanks to our listeners who contacted with us on social media regarding what you like or dislike regarding book covers! You all made prepping for this episode so much fun.

Romance is officially defined as having a central love story and an optimistic and uplifting ending, however the gals at Love & Lust wanted to dive deeper into that definition and question it. Does every single romance novel really need a happy ending? Spoilers: we don’t all agree with each other on this topic BUT we have plenty of giggles and fun discussing it.
